'First seen in Paris in 1841, 'Giselle' - with its arch-Romantic story, technically and emotionally demanding roles for the prima ballerina and for Duke Albrecht, and its elegant, highly melodic score - set a precedent for later ballets and remains a touchstone of the repertoire.
