Na Leo Kani O Punahele

In 1978, with Hui Ohana disbanded, Ledward Kaapana formed a new group with Bernard Kalua on bass and Alika Odom on rhythm guitar. They called themselves Na Leo Kani O Punahele, which was also the title of their first LP. "I Kona" was the new group's signature song. Fans had difficulty remembering the long name all in the Hawaiian language and referred to the musicians as "the group that plays "I Kona." By the second LP, Na Leo Kani O Punahele had renamed itself I Kona, sometimes spelled as Ikona.
