Overview

Unsquare Roots --- 2000

This third CD by drummer Pierre Courbois' quintet concerns itself with past, present and future. At the age of 60 many a musician would have the tendency to look back, but Courbois manages to put this retrospective aspect into perspective. For his new double quintet (the regular quintet plus five reeds) he asked musical friends to arrange his own compositions. The spectrum of arrangements is a great showcase for Courbois' many-faceted musical interests. For in the past he has been one of the first Dutch musicians to take up free music (and record for ESP, the label where he's back now), but also one of the earliest experimenters with jazz-rock in Europe (his Association PC has been rightly famed). At 60 his music has matured into the organic marriage of great melodies and exciting rhythms. The odd meters that are Courbois' signature mark are there, but never so obviously as to sound contrived. They add their distinctive flavour and make the music truly his own. Recorded on two track at the Werktheater, Amsterdam, 28 and 30 December 1999 by Don Vonk Mastered and edited by Paul Pouwer at Willibrord Studios, Veenendaal Producer: Egon Kracht Executive producer: Yuri Honing
