Popism (Pocket Radiodrops Volume Two) --- 2006-01-00

Cardboard sleeve Track notes from Creeping Bent's MySpace page: The Creeping Bent Organisation present...POPISM 1. THE NECTARINE No9: Hanging Around/ReModel The Nectarine No9 feature Fire Engines leader Davy Henderson, this track sees them at their most pop-art with references to a period when the Fire Engines & Andy Warhola were lifestyle essentials. 2. THE SECRET GOLDFISH: O! Pioneers Co-written by the Goldfish & The Nectarine No9, this track doffs it cap to everyone from Willa Cather & Truman Capote, Roy Wood, & Subway Sect. 3. SAY JANSFIELD: A Sad Past This is the debut release by Say Jansfield, who recently made their live debut in London's ICA as guests of the Fire Engines. Say Jansfield inhabit a world where Harvest Records' Kevin Ayres/Roy Harper/Syd Barrett/Edgar Broughton get pastoral with Vernon Elliot's soundtracks to Oliver Postgate's 60's animations. 4. THE LEOPARDS: Rot With Me The Leopards were reckoned by John Peel to be the greatest art-surf guitar noise on the planet...we concur. "Rot With Me" was written and recorded for an abandoned album project by Vic Godard & The Leopards. Sadly, an amazing bootleg of Vic & The Leopards live at the LSE is all that remains. The Leopards were last spotted playing on & producing Orange Juice founder James Kirk's debut album on the Marina label. 5. GARETH SAGER: Honeypot Swarm Ex Pop Group majordomo and free thinker Gareth Sager enthralls with this languid sad lament, truly soulful. Sager has collaborated in recent years with punk-poet Jock Scot, and been an auxilliary contributing member of The Nectarine No9. Another collaboration, "Society Is A Carniverous Flower", this time with Optimo's Twitch and The Nectarine No9, was released on Beggars Banquet to great acclaim. This was followed by an unforgettable live performance at Glasgow's Optimo club. 6. KING CREOSOTE: Homeboy King Creosote has been charming the universe with his acidfolk in recent years. As well as helming the magnificent Fence label in Fife's mythikal East Nuek, King Creosote has found time to collaborate with the Earlies on the recently released "KC Rools OK" for Warner offshoot Names Records. Long live the king! 7. VIC GODARD & THE SUBWAY SECT: Back In The Void Again Vic Godard & Subway Sect remain the biggest influence on the Creeping Bent Collective. Subway Sect scarred the Scottish underground, their performance in Edinburgh in 1977 on the White Riot tour inspiring the future Sound of Young Scotland; Orange Juice, Josef K, and the Fire Engines. Vic is God. 8. ARTICLE 58: Distortion Produced by Postcard's Alan Horne and Malcolm Ross, Article 58 seem to have more in common with Albert Camus than Lou Reed. The aural personification of teenage existential angst, the debut album (Echoes, Thrash, & Harmony) is to be released in 2006. 9. FAKE EYELASHES: Pentimento/Palimpsest Fake Eyelashes made their live debut at Fence Record's Pittenweem Arts Festival, playing on the same bill as such luminaries as King Creosote, Pictish Trail, Lone Pigeon, and James Yorkston & The Athletes. This track is their recording debut, and reminds us all that the past always seeps through to the present. 10. FREECLOUD: Meet Me In Milan A melange of swirling electric 12 string and harmony, Freecloud put one in mind of some kidden Berserkley Records treasures, like Greg Kihn. A debut kitchen sink melodrama album, "Toffeetown" is nearing completion for release in 2006. 11. FUTURE PILOT AKA: Rip It Up An idiosyncratic take on Edwyn Collins' classic Orange Juice hit. Sung in punjabi, and recorded in the garage, the Pilot again proves he's earned his stripes. Forthcoming Creeping Bent single, "Eyes of Love", features sterling vocals by Stuart Murdoch and Sarah Martin from Belle & Sebastian. 2006 will see the release of "Secrets from the Clockhouse", the 4th album by Future Pilot AKA. Get well soon Edwyn. 12. PORT SULPHUR vs COLDITZ (featuring MONICA QUEEN): Towerblock Miss country-soul Monica Queen delivers a heartfelt vocal ruminating on days of rememberence past, on this nostalgic take on North Lanarkshire high flats. A big favourite of BBC Radio 3's Mixing It, Colditz does indeed like mixing it. Working from foundsounds to assemble audio verite, Colditz is working on a follow up to his lauded "People Are Diagrams" album. Look out for the debut single by Port Sulphur, an unholy mashup version of "The Faith Healer" by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band and "Discord" by the Fire Engines. The "Alex Discord" EP will be released in 2006. 13. SERF: Fiverounds Serf is putting the the finishing touches to their northern blight, the doric-infused paranoia that will constitute their debut album. Look out for a new single, "Hopper", that will preceed in early 2006. 14. FIRE ENGINES: Discord This live recording of the classic Discord was made at a 1980 performance in Valentinos, Edinburgh. Also on the bill that evening were SCARS, ASSOCIATES, JOSEF K. The Fire Engines' secret history can be obtained by purchasing CODEX Teenage Premonition, released on the esteemed Domino label. This archive documents the Fire Engines pre - Pop Aural history, and includes studio tracks recorded at the sessions for "Get Up & Use Me", alongwith live recordings of their first gig & a 1981 Valentinos show. White light, white heat!
