Craig Klein Talkative Horns

Overview

Craig Klein Talkative Horns --- 2021

This Recording is subtitled Musical Conversations On Lucien Barbarin. Lucien was a great New Orleans trombone player who comes from a long line of famous New Orleans jazz musicians; Danny Barker, Paul Barbarin, Louis Barbarin, Isadore Barbarin, etc. I was dear friends with Lu and we were going to a two trombone recording, but he was dealing with prostate cancer and when it got to stage 4 we had to put the record on hold. After Lucien died in Feb. 2020 I was at a loss as to how to move forward. I heard a record by Dicky Wells (trombone) and Rex Stewart (trumpet) Called Talkative Horns. I reminded me of what Lucien would do with his trombone, make it speak to the audience in every thing he ever played. Kevin Louis was Lu's trumpet player on many gigs in N.O. and I asked Kevin to be a part of this recording. The idea was to let the horns talk to each other musically with the idea that we were having a conversation about Lucien. It came off beautifully and Luciens wife even commented that it reminded her of Lucien. We are very pleased with this recording. Short solos with the trombone and trumpet really having these spiritual conversations about Lucien. Every song on here has a meanign connected to Lucien, either songs that he loved to do or songs I wrote with the thought of Lu.
