While Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, Adam Faith and Matt Monro were top on everybody's lips, there breathed a new lease of life for countless young women who would sing out and lay equal claim to the limelight. While Brigitte Bardot and Francoise Hardy flew the liberated flag for France, Dusty, Cilla and Sandie would hoist theirs higher. Innocence and elegance combined with a powerful pair of lungs would amply demonstrate their righteous presence in pop music, thereby creating a phenomenon that continues to endure with a captivating charm and magnetism. Back in 1965, the BBC was eager to enlist the emerging homegrown talents of female stars and fill the airwaves for eager listeners at home and abroad. Compiled here is a compelling selection of the best of British, a tribute to the endearing sound of 'femme vox'.
