East of the Moon

Overview

East of the Moon --- 2023-04-07

Recorded in March 2010 at Simple Sound Studio, Castel Maggiore (Bologna), by Stefano Onorati and Marco Tamburini; mixed in September 2022 at SOP Studio by Stefano Onorati; analog mastered in Novembre 2022 at Digitalsound Studio by Walter Bertolo. Caligola has been committed to rediscovering a great deal of previously unreleased music composed by Marco Tamburini, one of its most significant musicians. The late trumpeter from Cesena recorded and released five albums as a leader through us, but he featured as session musician in many others. Two years after «Red», the unpublished track by Three Lower Colors, the electronic music trio Marco led in the last years of his life, a new recording is out which is strongly connected to that experience. The trio had been working on the scoring of «Voyage dans la Lune» – the episode was included in a DVD collection with soundtracks of silent movies – and «Blood and Sand», both DVDs released through L’Espresso magazine in Spring 2010. Stefano Paolini, the trio’s drummer, was absent from that magical night those tunes evoke. Stefano Onorati, who rediscovered this priceless material and was the only fellow musician on that occasion, says: ”We recorded these tracks on one of those nights we used to spend at his studio... we headed to the studio to improvise without saying anything to each other, nor setting a goal, but just for the sake of it. While we were listening to the music we had just recorded I recall seeing Marco cry; he had been moved to tears, and to me that image sums him up better than anything else...We managed to establish a good communication which went beyond looks and words”. “Good communication” that this work fully conveys together with much intensity. From the intimate, introspective prayer Cantico to the experimental Lunar Eclipse we, almost imperceptibly, get to the nostalgic and abstract closing track As It Was via the title–track inspired by Davis – but one can also hear much Joe Zawinul in Onorati’s keyboard. It’s an album you should listen to from beginning to end. You’ll embark on an exciting, fascinating journey with the two musicians that will led you to discover – quoting Bowman’s famous 1934 standard (East of the Sun) that inspired the title–track – “east of the moon there’s always the sun, you’ll only have to wait for it”.
