The Music of Our Burnished Axes: New Recordings of Woods Songs and Recitations from Newfoundland and Labrador (2021) features 21 new recordings of locally composed woods songs, tunes, and recitations, performed by some of the province’s finest musicians, including the Swinging Belles, Rube & Rake, Sherry Ryan, Shirley Montague, Jim Payne, Aaron Collis, Mark Manning, LadyLike, Sherman Downey, Daniel Payne, Stephanie Payne, Dave Paddon, The Cormiers, and more. The accompanying booklet includes an account of lumbering and logging in Newfoundland and Labrador and explores the emergence of a vibrant local woods-song tradition.
