The Pynnacles Play The Deepest Blue --- 2014-05-13

Whomp Records is pleased to announce the release of The Pynnacles new single “Somebody's Girl” b/w “Pretty Little Thing”. These tracks were originally released by the Southern California garage band The Deepest Blue in 1966 and this is a tribute to them as well as the teen scene of the mid 1960's. This single, the second release for The Pynnacles, started as a conversation between The Pynnacles drummer, Thom Sullivan and singer, Sean Croghan one evening at practice. “Pretty Little Thing” had been part of the bands set since it's inception and they had recently added “Somebody's Girl” to their set; both of the songs were dance floor fillers and favorites of the band. Since these two songs constituted The Deepest Blues only single released, the band decided to record the songs as their own tribute to this little known band. Keyboardist Tamar Berk, did some research and found the two surviving members of the Deepest Blue, Alex Shackelford and Ken Zabel and made contact with them. Berk arranged for the band to interview Shackelford and Zabel via Skype and suddenly this project took on a life of it's own. Alex Shakelford sent Berk dozens of unpublished vintage photos of the teen scene in the Pomona Valley during the mid 60's including a couple photos of the the band. He also wrote an amazing essay about those few short years The Deepest Blue played and recorded this single in the summer of 1966. The Pynnacles guitarist, Scott Fox found that Zabel was a folk artist and it was decided that he should do the cover of the single. Meanwhile, Sullivan reached out to garage music wonderkind Greg Prevost (formally of the influential Chesterfireld Kings) and Prevost agreed to add some additional liner notes regarding the teen scene of the 1960's. This single is a love letter to the music and musicians that have influenced us over the years, it is a love letter to a bygone era when teen bands and clubs ruled the scene. The Pynnacles feel honored to have been able to include some of the people who have had this deep influence on us and our music.
