The Heavy Compilation

Overview

The Heavy Compilation --- 2020-06-20

Available for download via Bandcamp. This began as a project to rally together a group of musicians who were in lockdown due to COVID 19. The theme was chosen based on how "heavy" life feels under quarantine. I put a call out asking people to consider the concept of heavy and render it in music. Two months after the initial call out the state of current affairs aren't any less heavy. Everything is much worse. Currently the streets alive with people protesting the murder of black folks by the police. We all need to do our part to help out this movement. To make our communities safe for everyone, especially POC. I ask you to listen to this comp, even download it for free and then give your money to a cause that fights police brutality, but if you anyone does buy a download, all the money will be going to Communities United Against Police Brutality. Track 1 liner notes: "Electric Bass and the Sound of nails in a cardboard box" Track 4 liner notes: "Influenced by artists like Fushitsusha, Masayuki Takayanagi, Derek Bailey, Sonny Sharrock, & Snakefinger. A Teisco guitar with howling fuzz into a freeze reverb with additional synth processing on a send/return being manipulated live." Track 6 liner notes: "I was interested in making a song that held the way I feel "heavy," without being dark. Darkness gets a lot of air time right now in movies, television, books, and the media. Though I can feel and am aware of the dark "heavy" when it arises in me, it did not feel helpful or nourishing for me to explore or express that right now. I appreciate so much the opportunity to explore and create. Thank you." Track 7 liner notes: "Recorded at House Prom in Louisville KY on 5/17/2020 at 6am. “If I die in Indiana, don’t let me be buried there.”- Anonymous" Track 9 liner notes: "Originally submitted as a piece for a collaborative compilation (The Covid 19) they were kind enough to let me use it for this compilation instead." Track 10 liner notes: "This is not what I would typically consider "heavy" though I did channel my version of heavy (emotions) into the creation of this track." Track 15 liner notes: "Heavy, distorted, blown-out modular synth drone" Track 16 liner notes: "created over the last 20 years utilizing only cassette to cassette and/or vhs/vinyl to cassette manipulation and layering." Track 18 liner notes: "I used a Suzuki Omnichord, an Autoharp and a DIY Arduino based granular drone synth all run through various effects and drives." Track 20 liner notes: "I made a song that I think is quite heavy. I composed the Hammond piano tones for the world that is currently plagued by epidemics, including Indonesia. The song titled "Global Quarantine" I created to remember the conditions that I experienced at this time." Track 22 liner notes: "This track is a heavy slow-burner. Track starts with pump organ, and transitions to modulated hurdy gurdy with distorted acoustic guitar & tape loops." Track 23 liner notes: "Based on recordings of a malfunctioning headphone jack and a vacuum cleaner" Tracklist is stylized as: 07. let the bluegrass hold my head 08. massattack_m@ssconfusion 16.
