Overview
Mason Williams Songs --- 1966
This appears to be a demo recording intended to showcase the music of the then still relatively unknown singer-songwriter, Mason Williams. The DAVON etchings in the A&B side runouts signify that this record was issued by [l837215], an independent publishing company that likely was handling Williams' material at the time. A few of these songs wound up being re-recorded by Williams (with far more elaborate arrangements than the stripped down renditions heard on this LP) for inclusion on later releases. Based on what could be readily found online, four of the songs on this demo (Tosadnessday, Dirty Old Government Town, Fog Bound, Forest Lawn) were never recorded for commercial release anywhere. The B-side of this record is taken up by a single song, Amberwren. Clocking in at over 15 minutes long, it tells a tale of a medieval princess and is sung in the style of a minstrel lay. Although Williams never re-recorded this song himself for commercial release it did see the light of day when Australian folk singer, [a2216747], released it as the title track of his 1966 LP, [m=1575515].
