Just One Moment --- 2020

My first album, STEP UP, focussed on instrumental composition with lyrics on one song only. JUST ONE MOMENT expands the range of my musical expression to include instrumental, vocal, and spoken word jazz tunes. Chicken Dream Blues is a bright, vocal tune that emerged from the crack between dream and waking states. Da-De-Do Blues and Hoo You, from my first album, now have lyrics. Eyes Closed and I’m in the Mode arose from free-flowing piano explorations late at night. In Relief is a three-part jazz suite written during the first weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic, with guitar as the expressive force. The signature album tune, Just One Moment, is a romantic ballad with vocals, featuring Roland Bourgeois on flugelhorn. Roland’s participation rekindles a jazz friendship from the 1970s. My curiosity about an older tradition, spoken word jazz, is captured by my narrative readings in Dark Fragments and Stars Over West 7th. Vancouver, my first jazz composition, is presented as a piano duo that celebrates the rich and enduring musical relationship between myself and Miles Black. All my compositional efforts are supported by his encouragement and thoughtful guidance.
