Lumpy Gravy

Overview

Lumpy Gravy --- 1968-05-00

Early stereo pressing variant of original US release. Can be differentiated from the other similar versions by an alternate typesetting layout used on labels. First cat. # on front, spine & labels. Second cat. # inside gatefold. A curiously inconsistent piece which started out as a ballet but probably didn't make it. In the text balloon on the back cover Frank Zappa Says : "Is this phase two of : We're only in it for the money?" This release has a single pressing ring @ 31mm. It has a stamped "block-shaped" letter "S" in the runouts. These characteristics are indicative of an MGM pressed record from their pressing plant that was in Bloomfield, N.J. Etched in runouts show "MGS" denoting that it was mastered at this plant: [l1174302] "Lumpy Gravy" regular vinyl releases were not issued with blue "Verve Records" labels at all. Just the black labels. Excluding "promos" & "test pressings", just regular issues. Releases from the Bloomfield plant are known to be called "East Coast" pressings. Note inside gatefold, all the way to the right: "This Album Was Recorded In February Of 1967" Runouts are etched except '12, 11, [block-shaped S]' are stamped.
