Sturlunga: Battle of Iceland
Overview
Sturlunga: Battle of Iceland --- 2009
Sturlunga Saga tells the story of the Battle of Örlygsstaðir, which was waged between two rival clans vying for power on August 21st 1238. This bloody battle and its aftermath were the main reasons for Iceland's loss of independence to the Norwegian king in 1262. In Icelander's minds, the "Sturlunga age" is directly associated with turmoil and conflict when Iceland came to the brink of civil war. Voces Thules, in co-operation with Arngeir Heiðar Hauksson, searched for ancient melodies that would fit the verse in the chapter about dreams and premonitions connected with the battle. Voces Thules: Eggert Pálsson, Einar Jóhannesson, Eirikur Hreinn Helgason, Guðlaugur Viktorsson, Sigurður Halldórsson, Sverrir Guðjónsson Arngeir Heiðar Hauksson – Symphony and medieval gittern Owen Morse-Brown, Stephen Barber, Norbert Eckermann, Charles Wells – Makers of medieval instruments for Voces Thules Brynja Baldursdóttir – Cover and design The design is based on an image from the Icelandic 14th century Sturlunga manuscript Króksfjarðarbók, AM 122 a fol., f. 36r, Stofnun Árna Magnussonar í islenskum fræðum Limited Edition numbered (1238 copies).
