Muse Phonograph Record

Profile

Owned by the [l=Cameo Record Corporation], Muse Phonograph Record was a budget label produced for the S. H. Kress dime store chain. Launched in February 1922, it lasted only until mid-1924. The first 100 issues re-issue [l=Cameo (3)] masters and duplicate Cameo couplings and catalog numbers, except for a few that used masters from [l=The Jones Recording Laboratories]. In 1923, production of the Muse label was briefly contracted to the [a=Scranton Button Company]. That is why the catalog numbers 301-340 reproduce masters from [l=The New Emerson] label and other affiliated brands that pressed with Scranton, including [l=Grey Gull], [l=Banner], and [Regal (3)]. In early 1924, Cameo again took on the Muse label, which is reflected in the renewed appearance of [l=Cameo (3)] recordings under pseudonym. In the summer of 1924, however, the label was replaced by the similarly Cameo-produced [l=Tremont] label.
