UK arts organisation to promote all aspects of the arts in England, UK. It was formed from the division of the former [l=Arts Council of Great Britain], which was a non-departmental public body dedicated to the promotion of the fine arts in Great Britain. The [a=Arts Council of Great Britain] was divided in 1994, to form [l=The Arts Council Of England] (now [l=Arts Council England]), the [l=Scottish Arts Council], and the [l=Arts Council of Wales]. At the same time the The National Lottery was established and these three arts councils, plus the [l=Arts Council of Northern Ireland], became distribution bodies.
