SOCODI

Profile

Also appears as "So.Co.Di". Army Captain Marien Ngouabi, self-proclaimed Congo Head of State following a coup in 1968, decided on the creation of the Société Congolaise du Disque (SOCODI), a record company, pressing plant & recording studio in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. Its purpose was to encourage Congolese musicians to record their music in their own country instead of using facilities in Kinshasa (D.R. Congo) or in Europe. Thus, in the middle of the summer 1970, the SOCODI complex was inaugurated. It included a modern recording studio and a pressing facility capable of manufacturing 33 rpm lps and 45s. It operated until the early 80s. One of its first production was a Lp by [a=Les Bantous De La Capitale] titled: [r=6971897], that reflected the Congo`s historic ties with Cuba Text adapted from the link below which is an extract from the book "Rumba on the River" by Gary Stewart.
