1+1 (2)

Profile

"1+1" (also sometimes written as "One Plus One") was a series of cassettes issued by Island Records from February 1981 onwards. With the slogan "One side what you like. One side whatever you like", the concept was to allow the user to re-record one side of the cassette with music of their own choice. The series attracted some controversy as there were legal issues with distributors over the blank media. As a result, early examples from 1981 were single sided, featuring one entirely blank side, later examples (from 1982 onwards) had the music repeated on both sides but with one write-protect tab removed and a blank cassette label on one side. In 1983 the series was discontinued in the UK but taken up by Island's sub label [l10923] in US markets. Notes for contributors: - Blank sided tapes should be tagged as "Single Sided", but the side prefixes should remain in the track positions. - Two sided tapes with the programme repeated should show the tracks running on both sides.
