Mitchbal Records

Profile

1980s soul and house label from Chicago, Illinois, founded by [a=Nemiah Mitchell, Jr.], and [a=David Baldwin]. A combination of their names, Mitchbal, was the name given to their production enterprise. After David Baldwin lost interest, [a=Nemiah Mitchell, Jr.] adopted the moniker [a=Mitchbal] for himself. [a=Mitchbal] is also father to [a=Vince Lawrence]. Mitchbal Records started life in 1982 with the release of a couple of 7" singles aimed at the Blues and Soul market. The following year Mitchbal's son, [a=Vince Lawrence] and some friends, released the labels first 12" single aimed at the dance music market but with a decidedly lo-fi synth pop vibe, '(I Like To Do It In) Fast Cars' by [a=Z-Factor]. It was the labels next single, recorded together with [a=Jesse Saunders], 'Fantasy', that would make the label known as a House Music label. A few years later in 1986, and to avoid flooding the market with music from just one label, Mitchbal set up [l=Chicago Connection Records]. Both labels were single-handedly run by Mitchbal. In 2012 a deal was made with Chicago's [l=Still Music] to release most of the back catalog and some unreleased material.
