Stash Records
Profile
For the label, see [l=Stash Records Inc.] & [l=Stash] for earliest releases. US record company founded by Bernie Brightman. A struggling real estate agent who was also a longtime jazz aficionado and record collector, Brightman produced his first record, "Reefer Songs", a landmark compilation of marijuana-themed compositions, in 1976. Thanks to Bernie's promotional and business skills the record nearly sold out in six months and Brightman suddenly found himself part of the recording industry. The label lasted until the early '90s, although by that point it had evolved from its novelty status to release respectable blues and jazz from more contemporary artists.
