Jugodisk (2)

Profile

Label from Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia, established by Radio Belgrade ([l=Radio Beograd]) in 1951 and became defunct by mid-1950s. Radio Belgrade acquired two record pressing machines and placed them in a garage at Dorćol quarter in Belgrade around April 1951. Primary purpose of these presses was to transfer and store valuable audio archives of this radio station onto gramophone records, and first such records were made during summer of 1951. So, Radio Belgrade can be considered the pioneer of gramophone industry in Serbia. By August 1952, for commercial purposes, they manufactured and released 17 shellac titles on 78 rpm, with 3 minutes running time per side, in total circulation of 12 000 copies. Full title of the label was: JUGOSLOVENSKE GRAMOFONSKE PLOČE - BEOGRAD - HILANDARSKA 2, JUGODISK. By the mid 1950s in the worldwide market these shellac records were gradually being replaced with vinyl records with micro grooves on 33 and 45 rpm, having more recording capacity and offering much better sound quality, thus making Jugodisk shellac records obsolete. Jugodisk was a forerunner of the [l=PGP RTB] label that was established in 1959 by Radio-Television Belgrade ([l=RTB]) public broadcaster. The Jugodisk staff consisted of 6 employees only, while their working premises and the pressing plant were located in a room of 500 square meters.
