Care Of Editions
Profile
Care Of Editions is a record label that explores the relationship between digital and physical distribution through the means of an experimental business model. Each of the planned 6 releases are limited to an edition of 118 vinyl LPs and 45 downloads. Using the profits made from selling the vinyl edition, the label pays people to download the music. Starting with 1 dollar and ending with 45, the dollar amount someone receives is equal to the download edition number. More downloads become available, at a great value, as more records sell. The relationship between vinyl sales and download availability is charted out on the backs of each record cover. If an edition sells out, the label recovers all of its production costs and breaks even. The model isn't geared towards sustainability or endless accumulation, but towards bringing the project to a close once all 6 releases have sold out. This closing-up is visualized on the website, which gradually disappears as downloads go out of stock.
