Also appears as "Back Beat Records" or "Backbeat". American label originally from Houston, TX, launched in August 1957. A subsidiary of [a=Don Robey]'s Peacock Records, best known for recordings by [a=Roy Head], [a=O.V. Wright] and [a=Carl Carlton]. For any unofficial / bootleg copies of this label please use [l502354] Shut down in 1974 by ABC Records (which bought Robey's labels two years earlier; the remaining acts, including Carlton, were transfered to the parent ABC label). Later renamed [l292069]. 45 RPM Catalog Number, Date and Label Identification: 500 through 530 (1957–1959): White label. 531 and higher (1960 forward): Red "drum" label. The label name is often shown as one word, "Backbeat."
