Independent record label established late 1966 by [a=The Who]'s managers, [a=Kit Lambert] and [a=Chris Stamp], along with [a=Pete Kameron], under the wing of and distributed by [l=Polydor] ([l=Polydor Records Ltd.]), initially run out of Lambert and Stamp's [l=New Action Ltd.] offices in Belgravia, London. The label was originally the non-North American home of [a=The Jimi Hendrix Experience] (signed January 11, 1967) as well as [a=The Who]. Later signings included [a=The Crazy World of Arthur Brown], [a=Thunderclap Newman] and [a=Golden Earring]. In the early 1970s, Track declined due to mismanagement, and the loss of rights to the Hendrix catalogue. Then on May 22, 1974, The Who parted with Lambert and Stamp as their managers. The Who left Track and signed with Polydor. Lambert and Stamp relocated to New York in 1976, to focus on producing [a=LaBelle]. In 1977, Track was to be revived under new managing director Mafalda Hall, and signed [a=The Heartbreakers (2)]. But by early 1978, the company went into liquidation, owing £70,000. Track ceased trading in 1978. Lambert died in 1981. In 1999, Stamp passed the rights to the name to [a=Ian Grant] (former manager of [a=The Stranglers], [a=The Cult] and [a=Big Country]), who relaunched the label and uses the "Track Record" name and logo. This new company does not hold the rights to the back catalogue.
