During South Africa's apartheid years, many international record companies (like [l=CBS] and [l=Epic]) preferred to distribute their products through various local licensees (such as [url=http://www.discogs.com/label/Gallo+Record+Company]Gallo[/url]). However, in the New South Africa following 1994, many of these multinational companies themselves entered the country, establishing a presence and taking control of their labels. One of these was [url=http://www.discogs.com/label/Sony+Music+Entertainment+Inc.]Sony[/url], which by now had taken ownership of [b]CBS / Columbia Records[/b] and entered SA in 1995 as the newly-formed [b]Sony Music Entertainment (South Africa)[/b]. Sony merged with [l=BMG] between 2004 and 2008.
