Grand Opera Disc Record

Profile

A short-lived sublabel of [l=Columbia Phonograph Co.] used in 1903 to release records for famous opera singers at the time. Some of the few artists that recorded for this label were soprano [a=Suzanne Adams] (with her husband, cellist [a=Leo Stern]), soprano [a=Marcella Sembrich], contralto [a=Ernestine Schumann-Heink], baritones [a=Antonio Scotti], [a=Giuseppe Campanari], and [a=Charles Gilibert] (with his wife, mezzo-soprano [a=Gabrielle Lejeune-Gilibert]), and basso [a=Edouard De Reszke], which were the only recordings he made. These recordings also had bandleader [a=Charles A. Prince] playing piano accompaniment, early on in his career with Columbia. However, Grand Opera Disc Record was quickly overshadowed by [l=Victor Red Seal] and ultimately abandoned by the end of the year as they sold rather poorly due to their high price and inferior sound quality, and as a result of many of the aforementioned artists leaving Columbia to record with Victor Records.
