Editions Ad Libitum

Profile

Editions Ad Libitum is an in-house music label and publishing imprint of Ad Libitum, or "Centre International du Pianoforte," a French research association and collection of historical keyboard stringed instruments, established in 1993 by [a=Alain Roudier] and based in Étobon in eastern France. Roudier served as Ad Libitum's director until his retirement in 2019, succeeded by current president Marc Feller and the instrument atelier's chief and collection keeper, [a=Francis Duvernay]. Ad Libitum began around Alain Roudier's private collection of about thirty antique pianofortes and significantly expanded over the years, now featuring over 80 fortepianos, harpsichords, organs, clavinets, and other XVIII-early XIX century instruments by such renowned builders as [a=Sébastien Érard], [a=Robert Stodart], Ignaz and [a=Camille Pleyel] of "Pleyel et Cie," [a=John Broadwood], and [a=Conrad Graf]. All instruments are restored and maintained in working order, regularly displayed in exhibitions, and used in concerts and recordings. Ad Libitum holds an extensive research library centered around invaluable "Erard·Pleyel·Gaveau" archives that Roudier uncovered in the early 1990s and rescued from imminent destruction. He became the legal guardian and first researcher to catalog and study over 12,000 objects, including letters, technical drawings, account books, photographs, and workshop inventories.
