The Originals

Profile

[b]This is a Series, not a label on its own. Only add it to the "Series" field in LCCN, together with the actual label of the release.[/b] The Series was established in 1995, featuring legendary recordings from the [l7703] catalogue. PolyGram originally intended the series to end in Deutsche Grammophon’s centennial year, 1998 with its 100th title ([r20450995]), but decided to continue the series. From 2006, it also included recordings made by [l5320] and [l7704], with each label using a very similar logo for their titles in the Series. All three labels are part of the [l38404] (UMG) group. These titles were often reissues of remasters previously released on Decca ([l429629] and [l301739]) and Philips ([l208141]). In 2014, DG released a 50 disc (42 title) box set, [r7459760]. They followed this with a second 50-disc (38 title) box set, [r9095166], in 2016. This release appeared shortly after the last new title (by catalogue number) in the series, [r12967066]. In all, approximately 395 titles (Deutsche Grammophon and its Archiv Produktion imprint, Decca and its subsidiaries Argo and Philips) were released. Of these, 225 were DG or Archiv titles, mostly released before 2006. In Japan, 120 titles of the Originals series were released or re-released in 2001 ([l1846195]), 2009 and 2010 ([l2300521]). 20 of those releases are unique to Japan as part of The Originals series. Nearly all of the unique titles were (as above) reissues of remasters previously released on Decca and Philips,. [i]Note that the [g4.6.2] states: "Series - A branded series of releases. These will usually be a number of releases on one label, carrying a distinct extra branding indicating a series". Covering more than one label, this Series is an exception.[/i] Analog recordings were remixed and remastered (SPARS=ADD) using Original-Image Bit-Processing technique.
