Emigre

Profile

Dutchman Rudy Vanderlans and Czech Zuzana Licko planned the publication of the first issue of their own local music magazine Emigré, in San Francisco. It launched in early 1984 as "the magazine that ignores boundaries," independently produced and distributed. It was the first magazine to embrace digital production. All were initially designed by Zuzana Licko but later the collection was supplemented by internationally renowned designers like Jeffrey Keedy, Barry Deck and Ed Fella. Although it began as a magazine concerned primarily with music, it moved towards digital design and was published quarterly with occasionally a free CD as give away. Emigré launched their music label [l402668] in 1990 with releases available on cassette and CD only. Releases were available by mail order from Sacramento, CA. but were also distributed in Europe by Semaphore and regional distributors in the United States.
