Sounds Of Death was a magazine published by Independent Media International, Inc. It covered the international death, black and thrash metal scenes, as well as horror movies. Many issues featured interviews with artists who provided illustrations for record covers, like Wes Benscotter and Petagno. Beginning with issue #4, the magazine included a sampler CD. Most of these CDs were compiled by a label for the magazine, but some samplers were included without the SOD logo. Issue #4 included the [r1751317]. Issue #15 included the [r2594782]. Issue #22 included [r4704886]. Issue #23 included [r3663002]. Issue #27 included [r2864082]. Issue #29 included [r4745565] and [r2791401]. Issue #25 did not include a sampler. In 1998, SOD Records released CDs for Jungle Rot, Engrave, and Burnt Offering. SOD ran for 20 issues between 1991 and 2003. In 2003 David Horn and Dan Zimmer started another magazine called Anvil. Anvil only published 4 issues between 2003 and 2004. Only one issue came with a CD sampler. Issue #2 included the Southern Lord sampler [r679617]. Horn and Zimmer then returned to SOD, picking up with issue 21 and continuing until issue 29, published in 2009. After the demise of Anvil, David Horn continued in the world of extreme metal magazines by publishing D.O.A.
