I Grandi Del Jazz

Profile

Italian series under label Fabbri Editori, but also German releases are known. In Brazil released in series "[l578855]". Note: This series is actually unnumbered. There are two different issues, often with different cat# and different release date of course. At the moment it looks the way that the earlier series has the booklets glued, while the later one has it stapled into the gatefold cover. The first release of the 'first series' was in April 1979 with "Count Basie" ("Le Big Bands" category), which on the back of the cover featured the "I Grandi del Jazz" program, divided into 10 categories, and the written "In 80 dischi tutto il Jazz dalle origini alle avanguardie". [[r2531489]] The exit n. 77 "Eric Dolphy" was the last with the written "In 80 dischi tutto il Jazz dalle origini alle avanguardie". [[r2905087]] From exit n. 78 "Max Roach" the series was extended to 104 records and 13 categories, and on the back of the cover the writing became "In 104 dischi tutto il Jazz dalle origini alle avanguardie." [[r2904945]] The exit n. 104 was the last of the series [[r2628833]]. With each successive weekly release, the artist's name is highlighted by the color RED. The exit n. 34 "Sonny Rollins" was the last of 1979 and the n. 35 "Coleman Hawkins" was the first of 1980. The exit n. 86 "Chick Corea" was the last of 1980 and that of no. 87 "Cecil Taylor" was the first of 1981. The exit n. 104 "Il Jazz Dell'Europa Orientale" was the last of the series. The first release of the 'second series', presumably in April 1981, was with "Louis Armstrong" ("La Tradizione" category). In the 'second series' the order of the releases of the categories, "Le Big Bands" and "La Tradizione" of the 'first series', have been reversed; this explains the different catalog number between the cover and the vinyl, as the discs of the first series were used also with the new cover. [[m352519]] On the back cover, obviously since the first release, the writing is "In 104 dischi tutto il Jazz dalle origini alle avanguardie". In the weekly releases, the artist's name is no longer highlighted by the red color. [[r14293434]] The exit n. 42 "Lionel Hampton" was the last of 1981 and that of n. 43 "Lee Konitz" was the first of 1982. The exit n. 90 "Joe Williams" was the last of 1982 and that of n. 91 "Tony Bennett" was the first of 1983. The exit n. 104 "Il Jazz Dell'Europa Orientale" was the last of the series. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In practice, to simplify, a quick and easy way to recognize the first or second series is to check on the back cover what the first and third categories of the plan of the work are. The first series (1979-1981) has: "Le Big Bands" e "La Tradizione". The second series (1981-1983) has: "La Tradizione" e "Le Big Bands". Year of release of the first series (artist's name is highlighted in red): 1979 = from number 1 to 34. 1980 = from number 35 to 86. 1981 = from number 87 to 104. Year of release second series (artist's name remains written in white): 1981 = from number 1 to 42. 1982 = from number 43 to 90. 1983 = from number 91 to 104.
