American independent record label and label services company founded in 2006 by [a=John Smith (14)] and [a=Erica J. Haskell] that releases folk and roots music. The label has released music by [a=Pokey LaFarge], [a=Willi Carlisle], [a=Anna & Elizabeth], [a=The Hackensaw Boys], [a=Mighty Poplar] (Grammy-nominated), [a=Che Apalache] (Grammy-nominated), [a=Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge] (Grammy-nominated), [a=Western Centuries], [a=Dori Freeman], and [a=JP Harris]. Free Dirt also works with [l=PM Press] to co-release spoken word and folk music. Together they've put out lectures by [a=Noam Chomsky] and [a=Howard Zinn] and music from [a=Chumbawamba], [a=Leon Rosselson] and [a=Robb Johnson], among others.
