Gramofonové Závody

Profile

Czech record manufacturer, operating under this name between 1948 and 27 October 1999. The company started manufacturing shellac records in 1948 after the nationalization of [l=Ultraphon] and [l=ESTA]. The Loděnice plant was founded in 1951. In 1953 began the production of 10" vinyl LPs for export, during the first years only in small quantities due to quality issues, however. Test production of 7"/45 rpm EPs began in 1954, with a broader catalog for export appearing in 1955, followed by more 7" releases for the domestic market in 1956. The first 12" vinyl LP was pressed in 1956. First 7"/45 rpm SPs (Short Play = “krátký záznam” ≈ “single”) for the domestic market were released in 1959. The first stereo records for the domestic market were released in 1962. Compact cassette production began in 1972, CD production in 1988 and DVD production in 2001. Gramofonové závody also occasionally acted as a label in the 1990s. Company renamed to “GZmedia, a.s.” on 27 October 1999, to “[l=GZ Digital Media]” on 17 January 2000, and to [l=GZ Media] on 1 January 2014. Label renamed to “GZ vydavatelství” (GZ Publishing).
