Fat Hippy Records

Profile

Fat Hippy was born of a frustration at the lack of support for the wealth of musical talent we found coming through the door every week at our Aberdeen based recording and rehearsal studios, Captain Toms. So in a sort of necessity is the mother of invention stylie we started the label back in October 2002 with a £1000 overdraft, a vague plan to help raise the profile of the burgeoning North East music scene and an anarchic dream of overthrowing the evil tyranny of the $ driven corporate music industry and replacing it with our own slightly nicer one! Might sound unbearably naïve and stupid but think of it as an involuntary reaction to being part of disenfranchised anthropocentric oligarchy weakly disguised as a democratic society. Several years on we’ve managed to pay off the overdraft but we still have the dream and we still continue to nurture and promote the wealth of talent that came – and still flows - through the doors of Captain Tom’s. Since 2002 we’ve released over 50 CDs, sold them all over the planet and recorded with more than seventy different artists from across the country. If nothing else we’ve been prolific! Label highlights include Driveblind who, subsequent to their 2003 release, signed to Geffen Records, The X-certs, recently signed to One Records and Amy Sawers, championed by Northsound as ‘The Next Big Thing’ at their 25th Anniversary Awards. The Fat Hippy Sampler’s, which have showcased the label’s talent to a broad spectrum of music lovers, continue to attract attention and have been well received by the Scottish music media.
