White Cube

Profile

British contemporary art gallery, opened in 1993 by [a=Jay Jopling] in London. In addition to two UK branches, Mason's Yard in Central London and Bermondsey in South East, White Cube operates four international galleries in Hong Kong, Paris, New York City and West Palm Beach in Florida, USA. White Cube represents several notable living artists, including [a=Damien Hirst], [a=David Altmejd], [a=Georg Baselitz], [a=Tracey Emin], [a=Cerith Wyn Evans], [a=Theaster Gates], [a=Gilbert And George], [a=Antony Gormley], [a=Mona Hatoum], [a=Anselm Kiefer], [a=Julie Mehretu], [a=Beatriz Milhazes], [a=Sarah Morris (2)], [a=Gabriel Orozco], [a=Virginia Overton], [a=Eddie Peake], [a=Doris Salcedo], [a=Marc Quinn] and [a=Gavin Turk] (in the past). The gallery also manages artist estates of [a=Al Held] (since 2018), Takis (since 2020), and [a=Isamu Noguchi] (since 2021). White Cube faced criticism on various occasions. In the late 1990s, the "Stuckists" art group declared war against "the sterility of the white wall gallery system," and opened a space with brightly-colored walls on the adjoined street. In 2002, they dressed as clowns and placed a coffin marked "Death of Conceptual Art" outside the gallery's entrance. In 2011, an anonymous group launched whitecu.be website, posting an institutional critique of authorship and trademark practices; it was shut down after the gallery's lawyers cease & desist letters against the Belgium domain registrar. Subsequently, this art group transformed legal correspondence with White Cube in the artwork series.
