GRT

Profile

GRT is the acronym of California-based General Recorded Tape, a recording tape manufacturer which expanded into the record business. It first established its own label and then bought out [l=Chess] Records from Phil and [a=Leonard Chess] during 1969. GRT also owned [l=Janus Records], under which they placed the Chess label administration in the early 1970s. Motto: "The Great Tapes". GRT had exclusive license to release cassette, 8-track and open-reel-tape versions of albums for a number of labels during most of the the 1970's, including [l=ABC Records] and [l=Buddah Records] for example. GRT Corporation filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on July 18 1979, but apparently did not survive the Chapter 11 restructuring. However, Janus Records continues as an independent holding company. For The UK label prevalent in the 1980's please use [l530199].
