Hi-Tone Records was a short-lived subsidiary label, of [l=Signature Recording Corporation], founded by [a=Bob Thiele], in February 1949. The purpose behind the label was to offer inexpensive direct market sales, to chain stores, of cover versions of hit songs. They differed from most budget labels as they mostly used "name artists" such as [a=Cab Calloway], [a=Francis Langford], and [a=Georgia Gibbs] as opposed to the (cheaper) unknown studio musicians favored by competing budget labels, such as [l=Varsity] and [l=Spotlite]. In 1950 they began releasing 10" 78s, in a variety of colors. In 1952 they relocated to New York City, NY. Hi-Tone was discontinued sometime in the early to mid 1950's
