Angelus (3)

Profile

Australian label produced by Clifford Industries Ltd. (although labels credit a fictitious Angelus Record Company) from 1928 to 1931. Angelus used masters from U.S. various record companies including Plaza, Gennett, N.Y.R.L. (Paramount/Broadway), Crown and also British Imperial. In many cases the recordings show the original artist credits, but frequently they were disguised under various pseudonyms. In some cases, real artist names from the Gennett catalog such as Emil Seidel, Alphonso Trent and Elmer Grosso were also used as pseudonyms and applied to recordings by competely different artist such as Lou Gold or Sam Lanin. Even Sam Lanin's name was used as a pseudonym (as Sam Lannin's Orchestra) on recordings which were not only by Sam Lanin but other bands including Fred Rich, The Clevelanders, Don Voorhees and others. The Angelus label design was also "borrowed" from Gennett (including the New Electrobeam slogan).
