Initially a Jamaican mento calypso label, later issuing Trinidadian calypso (on 7" singles) in the UK through Melodisc Ltd. with recordings from a number of different labels. In the case of calypso musicians who had recorded on GEMS and Vitadisc, it could release recordings from both labels, whereas the Melodisc label had only released recordings from GEMS. Thus, the labels founding may have been due to a new license agreement. The label's 7"s are notorious for often being sourced from 78s and not master recordings, so whilst the actual condition of the item may be mint, there may well be surface noise regardless.
