Richard Shirley

New Zealand born Australian trombonist. A member of the Westport Municipal Band before joining the [a=New Zealand Army Band] straight out of school. After six years with the Army, Richard went to the [l=New Zealand School of Music] to study Performance Trombone under Dr [a=Rodger Fox] and [a=David Bremner]’s guidance. After graduation, Richard moved to Australia to study towards his Masters of Performance at the [l=Melbourne University] under Michael Bertoncello. Prior to securing his job in the [a=Melbourne Symphony Orchestra] in 2016, Richard held positions with the [a=New Zealand Army Band], [a=Central Band Of The Royal New Zealand Air Force], Orchestra Wellington and [a=New South Wales Police Band]. Richard has also appeared as a guest musician with [a=Orchestra Victoria], [a=The Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra], [a=The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra] and the [a=Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra].
