Mark Small (5)

Mark Small has composed classical, jazz, pop, and sacred music for chorus, wind ensemble, orchestra, piano, and guitar. Small holds bachelor's and master's degrees in classical guitar performance from New England Conservatory and California State University, Fullerton. He has studied composition at Berklee College of Music, and served for 26 years as editor of Berklee today magazine. As one half of the Small-Torres Guitar Duo, he released six CDs of sacred and classical guitar music and received three nominations for Pearl Awards. The Small-Torres duo performed throughout America on television and radio and played with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on three live TV broadcasts. The duo disbanded after an 18-year professional partnership in 2005 to pursue separate musical directions. A piece he arranged for the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet was featured on the group's 2004 album Guitar Heroes, which won a Grammy Award in February 2005 for "best classical crossover album." Small’s solo guitar piece “Mississippi Revisited” won second place in the VIII International Composition Competition of the Corfu Festival held in Corfu, Greece, August 2005. Mark formed a new guitar duo with Peter Clemente. The Small-Clemente Duo released Fast Falls the Eventide on the Joy Spring Records label in 2006. It received glowing reviews, radio airplay nationwide, and was nominated for two Pearl Awards. In the summer of 2010, Mark began recording his first solo album, "Scenes.” It spotlights his compositions and arrangements for solo guitar and was released in February 2011.
