Nicola Logroscino

Nicola Bonifacio Logroscino was born in Bitonto in Italy in 1698. He first studied with his uncle, [a=Pietro Logroscino], maestro di cappella at the Cathedral of Bitonto, before furthering his studies at the Conservatory of Santa Maria di Loreto in Naples. In 1728 he had his first professional post as a organist at the archbishopric of Conza, where he composed the oratorio "Il mondo trionfante nella conzezione di Maria sempre Virgine". He then settled in Naples and dedicated himself to composing comic opera’s. Some people considered him as the inventor of the Opera Buffa. In 1758 he was called to Palermo, where he set up permanent residence in order to fill the post of maestro di cappella at the Conservatorio dei Figliuoli dispersi. In 1760 he composed his Stabat Mater. In these years he received commissions from several theatres. He probably died in 1764.
