Open City

Open City was an American experimental/free improvisation band from Los Angeles, California, formed by [a=Peter Kolovos] and active from the mid-1990s until 2005. All their recordings were captured live directly to 4-track, without edits and overdubs. Open City started as a duo between Kolovos and [a742217] on electric guitars, privately performing and improvising since the late '80s. Peter and Doug recorded Open City's debut album in July 1997, which came out as a self-titled [r=1343522] LP on Peter's newly-launched label [l=Thin Wrist Recordings] in 1999. A cassette with the duo's live performance at [l307715] college radio in Evanston, Illinois, [r=1343604], soon followed on Thin Wrist. In May 2001, Open City, which now expanded to a trio with [a=Andrew Maxwell] on drums, completed their second album, [r=1343595]. It was also released via Thin Wrist on vinyl, limited to 500 hand-numbered copies. Open City released several more live sessions on CD-R via Peter's label throughout 2002. The band's third and final full-length album, [m=450703], was recorded in Winter 2002 and came out on CD and limited edition LP. Open City continued occasionally perfoming live, mostly at local LA venues, such as [l384401]. In 2005, they recorded a 20-min free improv track, which appeared on [r=2536197] split LP with [a=John Wiese] of [a=Sissy Spacek] on iconic noise label [l=RRRecords] and monumental 10xLP [r=704439] boxset, co-produced by RRR with [l=Ground Fault Recordings] and [l=Troniks]. Open City also released [r=1343629] CD-R on Thin Wrist. The ensemble disbanded soon afterward.
