Paul Dunkel

Paul Dunkel (b. 1943) is an American flutist, conductor, composer, and arranger, music director of the [a=Westchester Philharmonic] from 1983 to 2008. He was born in New York in the family of a Viennese pianist Johanna Lustig and Russian scenic designer Eugene Dunkel. Paul studied flute with [a=Robert DiDomenica] and [a=William Kincaid]. In 1966, Dunkel took the silver medal at the Birmingham International Woodwind Festival in England ([a=James Galway] took the gold). As the music director of Westchester, Paul Dunkel developed a reputation for presenting new works and promoting new artists. In honor of his 15th anniversary with the orchestra, [i]Concerto for Flute, Strings, and Percussion[/i] by [a=Melinda Wagner] was commissioned. This work received a Pulitzer Prize in 1999.
