The Chosen Few (13)

The Chosen Few evolved from two New Haven, CT area groups who had 45s out: the Barries (three singles from '63-'65) and the Sonics (one single from '64). They were the first group to record on the Co-Op label. "Why Can't I Love Her" was issued in May, 1967. Two pressings exist, one miscredits the title as "Why Can't I Love You" in black color print, the other corrects the title, in white-silver print. In the summer of '67 they recorded their biggest local hit, a remake of Richard Barrett's 50s local hit, "Summer's Love". The Chosen Few kept true to the waltz-tempo slow dance beat, and their remake is still an immensely popular 'oldie but goodie' in the area to this day. In late '67 they recorded a slower, more vocal-y dramatic version of "Hey Joe" which was licensed to the Can-USA label, owned by a wealthy young Canadian guy aligned with the fashion industry who decided to branch out. It is pronounced as CAN as in Canada with U.S.A, not 'Can-noose-a' as most record geeks say it.
