Vincent Ruiz

Vincent (Yuen) Ruiz (1990) is a Swiss musician, composer and improviser living in Copenhagen. His latest work has been a study in patience, a focus on repetition and the interaction between timbres and resonances. A certain idea of stillness often leads his sonic explorations, as well as giving a narrow framework to his improvisational style. With a minimalism bordering on reductionism, Ruiz mixes tonal melodies and textural approaches. He works both as a solo artist and with various ensembles. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in double bass from the Musik Akademie Basel and a Master of Music in performance from the Rytmisk Musik Konservatorium of Copenhagen. He was awarded the Leenaards cultural grant in 2015 as an encouragement to further his compositional work. Ruiz was the former double bass player of the minimalist/post-jazz group Plaistow. He is a member of the Insub Meta Orchestra since 2017. He has performed extensively in Europe, Russia and Japan notably at the London Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Bimhuis, Klub Katarakt and Centre Culturel Suisse (Paris). He has played or collaborated with a vast array of musicians and improvisers including, among others, Magnus Granberg, Michael Pisaro, Greta Eacott, Nicole Hogstrand, d’incise, Samuel Reinhard, Emanuele Maniscalco, Kresten Osgood, Diatribes and Ryota Miyake.
