Joe Daniels (4)

British jazz drummer and bandleader. Born : March 09, 1909 in Zeerust, Transvaal, South Africa. Died : July 02, 1993 in Northwood, Middlesex, England. He left his native South Africa for England in 1922, at 14 years of age. His career began soon after. Daniels played with [a5903517] (brother of [a585783]) and formed his own band with Max Goldberg. Around 1930, he started recording as "Joe Daniel's Hot Shots" (with [a307182]), and they became a popular recording band. From autumn 1931 until January 1937 he worked as a drummer on all recordings with [a419459]. Joe Daniels and the Hot Shots were the ballroom band for Butlin's Holiday Camp in Clacton during the mid 1960s, and appeared in the Viennese Ballroom most evenings. He continued to play until 1990 when one of his last jobs was at the Savoy Hotel. Besides his driving beat, he was known for his exuberance and fun on stage and his spinning of his drums and playing his drums with towels and other percussive additions.
