George Hamilton Green

American xylophonist, composer, and cartoonist (May 23, 1893 Omaha, Nebraska - September 11, 1970 Woodstock, New York). "George Hamilton Green elevated the xylophone to the position where it was recognized as a legitimate concert instrument." He, his older brother, [a=Joe Green (6)] (1892-1939), and their younger brother banjo player [a=Lew Green (2)] (1909–1992), accompanied by trumpet, trombone, and tuba, formed the [a=Green Bros. Xylophone Orchestra] in 1918. In various configurations and under a plethora of similar names, e.g., [a=Green Brothers' Novelty Band] and [a=Green Brothers' Marimba Orchestra], they recorded scores of titles for both big and small labels for the next 21 years. After Joe's premature death in October 1939, George retired from the music business and became a cartoonist instead.
