American Gospel and R&B singer based in Memphis. [b]Not to be confused with [a=Joe Hinton] Soul singer, songwriter and producer for Motown.[/b] Born November 15, 1929 in Evansville, Indiana. Died August 13, 1968 in Boston, Massachusetts. Former gospel singer with The Chosen Gospel Singers ([l=Nashboro]) and The Spirit Of Memphis Quartet ([l=Peacock Records]); moved to Peacock's subsidiary [l=Back Beat (2)] to record R & B, scoring his biggest hit in 1964 with [a=Willie Nelson]'s "Funny (How Time Slips Away)".
