South African self-taught musician born in District Six (Cape Town), best known as a tenor saxophonist and his early collaborations with [a=Dollar Brand]. Born : February 02, 1944 in Cape Town, South Africa. Died : March 12, 1998 in Mitchell's Plain, South Africa. Note: Often spelt as [b]Basil 'Mannenberg' Coetzee[/b], after his early hit 'Mannenberg' from 1974, named after a settlement created by the apartheid government for low income coloured families on the Cape Flats.
